Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments
Happy Black Friday, commenters! We skipped the Week In Pop, 5 Best Songs, and 5 Best Videos columns because of the holiday this week, but I won’t make you wait until December for Shut Up, Dude. The new music release schedule is slowing down in this post-25 season, but there are still a few interesting projects on the horizon in 2015. Erykah Badu dropped a new mixtape today. AnCo will share a new single on Monday. New albums from Pusha T, Coldplay, and Baroness arrive next month. Rihanna’s Anti could be here any minute and Mic.com promises it’s [REVIEW TK].

I’m French, from Paris, I got friends who were in the venue, people i know who didn’t make it, and I’m really shocked that Vice made a “trailer” for this interview… A few seconds of the horror of this evening in the Bataclan, but “Behold, you’ll know all the horrible details next week, folks”. |

Adele’s voice is a force of nature, Adele’s songs are nothing special. Generally, I like having her around, though I will probably feel differently by the time Thanksgiving is over. Whoever decided to release this just before Thanksgiving/”The Holidays” is a genius, since it’s an almost ideally agreeable soundtrack for multi-generational family gatherings. It’s also kind of critic-proof: being upset that Adele didn’t venture further afield of her mid-tempo weepies is sort of like being upset that you’re eating turkey and mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving AGAIN. My problem with Adele is less anything to do with her than the sort of cultural reaction to her. Tom links to an article about crying in public to 25, I saw a FB status last night that was like “Just listened to 25, now I can cry myself to sleep.” It’s not like her music leaves me cold or anything, but at this point it’s almost hilarious to me how the baseline expectation for Adele is not that it’s some personal, idiosyncratic emotional journey, just that you’ll be able to subsume it to whatever sad emotions you’re feeling at the time. It kind of reminds me of when Les Mis came out and people we’re tweeting shit like “I’m already crying… during the previews.” There was just this promise of catharsis and an excuse to be part of a mass, public emoting that people really responded to. Anyway, I guess I should actually listen to this. BRB CRYING FOREVER. |
