Erykah Badu Clowns Iggy Azalea At The Soul Train Awards
Last night, Erykah Badu, who just released the fascinating But You Caint Use My Phone mixtape, acted as host for BET’s Soul Train Awards. And during her opening monologue, she took a shot at the world’s easiest target, Iggy Azalea. The evening focused on R&B, rather than rap. And Badu paused her monologue to take a fake call from Iggy, assuring her that it was OK for Iggy to show up because “what you’re doing is definitely not rap.” It’s not exactly a devastating blow, but wouldn’t you love to see Iggy attempt to clap back? Watch the zinger below, via USA Today.
You can watch more of the show — which featured performances from people like Jeremih, Jill Scott, and R. Kelly — here. The best moment may have been the Soul Cypher, a takeoff on the BET Hip-Hop Awards’ freestyle cypher videos. It featured Badu playing DJ and Gerald Levert, K-Ci, Lalah Hathaway, and Chrisette Michele singing improvised runs over the beat from Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Part 2.” Watch that here.
