New Madrid – “Don’t Hold Me Now” (Stereogum Premiere)
Athens, Georgia quartet New Madrid have an album called magnetkingmagnetqueen on the way, and lead single “Don’t Hold Me Now” suggests it will be a good one. Propelled by skittering drums and lockstep bass and topped off by Phil McGill’s mangy singsong, it sounds like an old Gang Of Four song reimagined in the translucent style of Modest Mouse’s The Moon And Antarctica. Per McGill, “Don’t Hold Me Now” is about “that sensation when someone or something pulls you from a dream at what can feel like the worst or the best time. Your last moment of the dream before being woken up. Don’t hold me now, I’m dreaming.” Listen below.
