Eliza Hardy Jones – “Criminal” (Stereogum Premiere)
You might know her as the keyboardist and vocalist for Strand Of Oaks, Buried Beds, and Nightlands, but now Philadelphia’s Eliza Hardy Jones is releasing her own debut solo album. Because Become is out next year and is co-produced by Dave Hartley (Nightlands, the War On Drugs). Jones is a trained classical pianist whose rise in music came by way of an electric foundation, and her sound reflects that lineage, filled with achingly raw lyrics that stretch along influences from classic pop to avant-garde. Lead single “Criminal” combines ambient synths and Jones’ floaty vocals in equal measure to create something as delicate as it is hard-hitting. Guitars are at the helm, anchoring the sound, breezy and emphatic at the same time. Listen below.
