The A.V. Club's A.V. Undercover series has been commissioning Christmas covers throughout this holiday season, and the latest is also the greatest. Ashley Monroe, one of today's finest country singers, took on Joni Mitchell's timeless Blue ballad "River," a tune that flips the typically cheery "Jingle Bells" melody into something deeply, profoundly sad. It's a genius pairing of singer and song, and you really ought to watch it below. (There's also an interview with Monroe.)
