The Song Exploder podcast ended last year with a contribution Björk, and it's ringing in the new year with an episode from Courtney Barnett. The Australian singer-songwriter breaks down her Sometimes I Sit And Think And Sometimes I Just Sit song "Depreston." She's expounded on the origin of the song before -- a house showing in the Melbourne suburb of Preston led her to contemplate mortality -- but she digs in even deeper here, deconstructing it piece-by-piece. The main riff in the song came about after Barnett was trying to learn how to play the Go-Betweens' Streets Of Your Town," and she describes the song as being "easy to write [but] hard to record." Barnett ends the episode by noting that the house it was inspired by wasn't even in Preston! Listen below.
