Bent Shapes – “New Starts In Old Dominion” (Stereogum Premiere)
Bent Shapes came onto the scene with their jangly, charming 2013 debut Feels Weird after several years of existing under the name Girlfriends, with Ben Potrykus and Andy Sadoway acting as the center for the Boston group’s rotating cast of members. Effortless hooks, cleverly layered wordplay, and an undercurrent of earnestness set them apart from the pack, three qualities that are more apparent than ever on “New Starts In Old Dominion,” the opening track and lead single to their new record Wolves Of Want, which demonstrates the band at the height of their prowess. “You’ve got a crippling debt, reason to be upset, and the right to believe order is just around the corner,” Potrykus sings like a smooth punk preacher as he offers to lend an ear: “I am always here to listen, or at least that’s my ambition/ I am, by my own admission, terrible at this shit,” he admits. A Steinway grand piano ushers him out, providing an appropriately perky outro to a song that doesn’t let up its boundless energy for a second. Listen below.
