Never wanted to defend Macklemore but I kinda feel like you’re off base here, Colin. The last few years people have said to Macklemore and Iggy “put up,” show us that isn’t just about money to you. Macklemore tries to make something provocative (keyword “tries”) and thoughtful, tries to show up for the fight, and you double down. It’s not his place to express solidarity? Or make music that will challenge his white fan base? I don’t think he’s tying to make a BLM anthem here, he’d need a lot more black fans to do that. IDK. This song is bad, and painfully earnest, and also just painful… But it’s not going to be a hit. And it seems sincere to me. Unless we’re just saying that anything Macklemore does is bad (which aesthetically might be true but perhaps not politically) then I’m not sure why you’re coming so hard against this. The song is actually a lot more thoughtful than this takedown … |
