BJ The Chicago Kid – “Turnin Me Up” Video
BJ The Chicago Kid is in the midst of his major label leap. The smooth R&B crooner is set to release his debut In My Mind in a couple weeks, and last month he announced the details of the album along with the lead single “Love Inside.” The album features a few leaders of the new school including Kendrick Lamar, Chance The Rapper, and Big K.R.I.T., but it has some serious old-school flavor. Before looking to his future, he took it back with an EP of D’Angelo covers in which he sounded more like “Untitled (How Does It Feel?)”-era D’Angelo than D’Angelo himself does nowadays.
His followup single is another look back, paying homage to late great soul man Marvin Gaye on “Turnin Me Up.” The crooning overflows with soul on this joint, with BJ’s falsetto punctuating the retro horns and bass. The matching clip is just a good old-fashioned studio jam session. BJ and his band give a stirring performance of the track, grooving as they play. There isn’t much more to it than that other than some simple overlays and effects, but if this doesn’t resonate with your soul then try your nearest automatic door to see if it will open for you a la Bart Simpson. Peep the video below.
In My Mind is out 2/19, fittingly on Motown. Pre-order is available here.
