tiny deaths – “The Gardener” (Stereogum Premiere)
Minneapolis/Brooklyn indie rock duo tiny deaths make a polished, soaring brand of brooding. They are set to release their Night Flowers EP later this month. Their latest offering, “The Gardener,” is somewhat of a departure as it’s more stripped down with a rawer vocal. Singer Claire de Lune’s melodic vocal delivery lifts the penetrating sincerity on the hook, “Let me know if you change your mind/ Let me know if you lose your mind,” as a bass groove drives the track. De Lune says the song is also a departure for her lyrically:
“The Gardener” is a song written from the perspective of the “bad guy” in a relationship, the person who does the cheating and heartbreaking. I thought it would be interesting to explore things from that perspective since I usually write about being the one getting my heart broken.
For a track that pushes the duo’s boundaries, it’s excellent. More exploration is welcome. Listen.
Night Flowers is out 2/19. Pre-order is available here.
