With Lions x Teri Gender Bender x Omar Rodríguez López – “I Feel You” (Depeche Mode Cover) (Stereogum Premiere)
Omar Rodríguez-López’s At The Drive In recently announced a tour and new music. Mexican garage punk duo Le Butcherettes will be join ATDI on their tour, and Teri Gender Bender is one half of that duo. (She’s also in Bosnian Rainbows with Rodríguez-López.) Baltimore’s With Lions just dropped their Fast Luck LP last month.
They’ve all come together to cover Depeche Mode’s 1993 single “I Feel You.” Indicative of a good cover, it sounds almost nothing like the original but keeps a bit of its essence. They dramatize the fun original, highlighting cinematic elements in the style of Ennio Morricone for a more haunting, evocative rendition. Natural intricate percussion with floor stomping, lap slaps, rattles, and chains mimicking a galloping horse combine with Rodríguez-López’s murky lead guitar line and eerie sweeps. Bender’s vocals are slow, dragging for a stirring effect. This truly belongs in a spaghetti western score. To think it started out as a Depeche Mode song is mind-blowing. Check out the collaboration’s transformative power below.
