Nikhil P. Yerawadekar & Low Mentality – “Jazz Now” (Stereogum Premiere)
Nikhil P. Yerawadekar, the bass player from Antibalas, has just released “Jazz Now,” the first track from his upcoming album Everything Lasts Forever with his band Nikhil P. Yerawadekar & Low Mentality. Despite Yerawadekar’s exclamation that he’s “singing jazz now,” Nikhil P. Yerawadekar & Low Mentality’s new song essentially exists outside of any one specific genre. “Jazz Now” is a fusion of Yerawadekar’s past work in afrobeat and dancehall, utilizing a steady conga beat and vibrant percussion, with recently adopted modern jazz sounds of a bold trumpet and bass line.
Produced by Yerawadekar and made up of members from Antibalas and a number of other contributors, Nikhil P. Yerawadekar & Low Mentality embraces an eclectic collaboration of talents. Everything Lasts Forever is a reflection of Yerawadekar’s experience growing up in Queens, and “Jazz Now” truly exemplifies this theme. The song sounds like New York, captures the city’s vast diversity through its groove and undeniable rhythm. Listen below.
Everything Lasts Forever is out 4/22 on 3rd Generation Recordings. Pre-order it here.
