Watch Zayn Debut “It’s You” With The Roots On The Tonight Show
A few weeks ago, the former One Direction singer Zayn Malik released “Pillowtalk,” his debut single. It immediately went to #1 on the US charts — a remarkable feat, especially when you consider that no One Direction songs ever charted that high over here, or that it’s not actually that great of a song. Last night, Malik was on The Tonight Show to debut “It’s You,” his second solo single. This one is better. It’s a dramatic, slow-building R&B ballad. And while I understood maybe 25% of the words Malik sang, the song gives him a great chance to show how nuanced and agile his vocals are; Malik never really got to do that in One Direction. Malik sang the song with the Roots backing him, giving a subtle and dramatically lit performance. And he also used the occasion to debut the Carter III-style cover art for his solo debut album Mind Of Mine. Watch the performance below.
Mind Of Mine is out 3/25 on RCA.
