Race Banyon – “What Are We Doing” (Feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
It seems that Drake-via-D.R.A.M. “Cha Cha” sound isn’t quite going away yet. New Zealand artist/producer Race Banyon harnasses those cha cha vibes on his new collab with Ty Dolla $ign, “What Are We Doing.” Those familiar bouncy, muted conga drums center the track as playful synth keys, rumbling bass, trap-y clicks, and resounding claps surround it. The title serves as the hook, and it’s an honest question delivered with sincerity, wonder, and feeling. The break down borrows from Right Said Fred’s 1992 hit “I’m Too Sexy.” Banyon and Ty trade sing-song verses about that sometimes uneasy state of limbo when you’re not quite sure what you and the person you’re dating will amount to relationship-wise. It’s a tough situation to be in, but at least you can have take some solace in the uncertainty knowing you’re dancing better than Drake in the “Hotline Bling” video while you move to it. Check it out.
