Michaela Anne – “Luisa” (Feat. Rodney Crowell) (Stereogum Premiere)
In the interim since 2014’s Ease My Mind, classicist country singer Michaela Anne uprooted from Brooklyn to Nashville, where she quickly made use of several legendary collaborators in the vicinity. One of them was Grammy winner and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Rodney Crowell, who lends harmony and gravitas to Michaela’s latest single. Co-penned by Michaela and Kristin Andreassen, “Luisa” is an energetic highway rambler about hitchhiking to Sacramento. Bolstered by aggressive honky-tonk guitar, rich pedal steel, and a casually commanding lead vocal, it bodes well for Michaela’s upcoming Bright Lights And The Fame. She shared some background on the track:
Luisa’s a song about having nowhere to go but home. It’s a man’s story of his wild and broken-hearted past through the highways of the west. Having Rodney Crowell’s voice on the song was quite a dream. His writing and singing has inspired so much of my own music, to have him on this song in particular, brought out the grit and wisdom I could only hope to convey.
And here’s an endorsement from Crowell:
With her new album on the streets, Michaela Anne won’t be long finding an exalted place among alt-country’s most recent crop of singer-songwriters.
