Henryk Górecki's 1976 Symphony No. 3, Op. 36 -- aka the Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs -- consists of three movements, revolving around (1) a 15th century Polish lament of the Virgin Mary, (2) a message written in the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, and (3) a Silesian folk song about a mother searching for her son, who was killed by the Germans in the Silesian uprising. Now, multi instrumentalist Colin Stetson has re-imagined the entire piece for his own new work. Stetson released a video for an excerpt of "Sorrow I" earlier this month, and now, this excerpt from "Sorrow II." Here Stetson uses modern recording technology to provide a sound whose own expansive shape mimics the broad natural landscapes featured in "Sorrow I." Listen.
