Tancred – “Control Me”
Tancred has been the side project of Now, Now guitarist Jess Abbott for a few years, and her third Tancred LP, Out Of The Garden, is out next week. She’s already shared the lead single “Sell Your Head” and the followup “Bed Case.” Today, she offers “Control Me,” a candid relationship quandary that ponders how to deal with the very real possibility that someone you love will not always be there. She opens with a stark, difficult conversation: “He said to me, ‘I don’t know how it’s gonna be without you, without me’/ I said to him, ‘I don’t want to find out what it’s like because you control me.'” But after the huge hook, she confidently asserts, “This is how to learn to be happy/ This is how we learn, the hard way.” She knows things get messy in life and relationships and it’s unavoidable, but how you deal with it is the biggest factor in your happiness. When things get tangled in her storytelling, the energy picks up for the song with lots of distorted guitar and frenetic drums that mirror the barrage of feelings that can come with the ups and downs of romantic endeavors. Check it out.
Out Of The Garden is out 4/1 on Polyvinyl. Pre-order it here.
