It’s pretty amazing what Moses Sumney can do with his heavenly voice, hand claps, and a looping machine. I’ve heard him perform “Everlasting Sigh” five or six times since 2014 and it never gets old — including on the official studio version that finally emerged today. The minimal, soulful folk singer-songwriter has only a handful of tracks to his name between 2014’s Mid-City Island EP and the “Seeds” b/w “Pleas” 7″ he released last year, so even if “Everlasting Sigh” is not new exactly, the appearance of any Moses Sumney recording is a rare blessing.

The polished audio adds some subtle percussion, guitar strums, and rumbling tribal drums to the hand claps and vocal flourishes of his live performance. Sumney sings “If vultures can be songbirds, let it die” as he evokes the feelings of finally freeing yourself from something or someone that has restrained you for far too long. The soundscape slowly swells around his voice leading to a delightful controlled cacophony for the crescendo. I can’t wait for a full-length gift from Sumney. Listen.
