Stream Sturgill Simpson A Sailor’s Guide To Earth
Two years ago, Sturgill Simpson made a name for himself with his album Metamodern Sounds In Country Music, a collection of psychedelia-laced outlaw country rambles that took Simpson from Bandcamp obscurity to major-label fame. Now that the whole ’70s-style outlaw-country sound is ascendant, thanks to Simpson peers like Chris Stapleton, you might expect Simpson to break out huge with his major-label debut. Instead, he’s going left, making a genre-blurred Southern-rock freakout that doubles as a concept LP addressed to Simpson’s infant son. The new album A Sailor’s Guide To Earth is full of philosophical musings, twanged-out rock, and old-school soul, with Simpson even bringing in the Dap-Kings horn section for a number of tracks. We’ve heard his first single “Brace For Impact (Live A Little)” and his fascinating version of Nirvana’s “In Bloom,” and now you can (and should) stream the whole album. Check it out below, via NPR.
A Sailor’s Guide To Earth is out 4/15 on Atlantic.
