Evvol – “The Beat Within” (Stereogum Premiere)
Last year, the electronic duo Evvol released their debut Eternalism, an album of nocturnal synthscapes that effectively evoked the experience of wandering through Berlin — the city in which members Julie Chance Jane Arnison are based — at strange hours. Less than a year later, they’re following it up with a new EP, Physical L.U.V.. The group has already shared the EP’s glistening title track, and today we’re premiering the next preview of Physical L.U.V. with “The Beat Within.”
Together, the tracks illustrate how the duo’s morphed a bit since last year. There was more anxiety and gloom hanging over Eternalism than there is on Physical L.U.V.. The change is hinted at in Stefan Faehler’s surreal pink-hued cover: Physical L.U.V. is a brighter affair than its predecessor, trading in sensuousness more than headiness.
“The Beat Within” might be the clearest example of that. Built on vaporous synths and a beat worthy of some space-age lounge, the song floats and slithers along through a light haze that’s inviting, but still enigmatic. It’s not hard to picture the song as the lovesick jam soundtracking a nonexistent film’s listless nightclub scene, drenched in pink and red lights akin to the EP’s artwork. Listen below.
Physical L.U.V. is out 5/13 on !K7 Records/Mad Dog & Love. Pre-order it here.
