Everything DJ Quik does is worth a listen. The Compton rapper and producer has been making tricky, innovative, idiosyncratic knucklehead G-funk for over two decades, and his last album, 2014’s The Midnight Life, was just one more great album in a long string of them. And on the new EP Rosecrans, Quik teams up with Problem, a Compton rapper from a much younger generation. (Million Dollar Afro, the 2013 collaborative mixtape from Problem and Iamsu!, was a Mixtape Of The Week back in 2013.) The new EP is full of squelchy beats and conversational raps. It’s got guest appearances from people like the Game, Wiz Khalifa, and Buddy, and it’s also got “A New Nite / Rosecrans Groove,” a 10-minute strut-funk odyssey. The whole EP is absolutely worth your time, and you can stream it below.
