Oddisee – “Born Before Yesterday”
Oddissee has been an unsung, underrated, underground killer for quite some time now. The DMV-bred, Brooklyn-based rapper/producer just quietly murders shit on the regular and goes about his business. He dropped last month’s excellent Al Wasta EP nonchalantly as a hint to bigger and better things, and his upcoming instrumental full-length The Odd Tape is just that.
He shared the lead single, “No Sugar No Cream” less than a week ago, and today he follows up with the wandering instro excursion, “Born Before Yesterday.” Beautiful grand piano, rumbling bass synth, cymbal tings, and drums with knock that runneth over — those elements take on the elevated form of a movement instead of just your average beat. The energy swells and recedes at precise moments for a smooth, soothing ride. I’d love for him to blow up, but I also don’t want these instrumental journeys criminally ruined by wack rappers trying to get on. Listen.
The Odd Tape is out 5/13 on Mello Music Group. Pre-order it here.
