Amy Oelsner (Amy O) and Erin Tobey both make music on their own, but were drawn to one another out of a mutual admiration for each other’s songwriting abilities to start Brenda’s Friend, a new project that allows them to create something a little outside of their comfort zones. The two Bloomington, Indiana-based musicians are releasing their new tape, House Down (a follow-up to last year’s Under The Shrub), later this month, and the title track demonstrates how formidable they are when working together. “House Down” is a stacked puzzle of interlocking rhythms, almost sounding like a skipping record as their voices mesh with, compete against, screech over each other. “We’re playing time over memory/ We’re playing time over,” they repeat, stretching out that last syllable into a yell. It’s an addictive, accomplished piece from two experienced musicians. Listen below.
