One of Prince’s rare TV appearances was playing himself on a 2014 episode of New Girl (which FOX re-aired shortly after his death last month), and Zooey Deschanel talked about his appearance last night on Conan: “He spent a lifetime cultivating mystique, and then one September day three years ago maybe, I got an email from his manager saying that he liked watching the show and wanted to come on, which is surprisingly because I wouldn’t have pegged him as a New Girl fan…”

The episode was built around a party that Prince was throwing, and the show booked a few celebrities to film cameos, two of whom were Khloe Kardashian and Kris Jenner, but they were nixed at the last minute: “I’m not sure exactly how the celebrities for the party were chosen,” Deschanel explained. “But someone was friends with the Kardashians and had made a phone call and they kindly came on to shoot a little cameo part where they were at Prince’s party.” She goes on to describe how a production assistant frantically started collecting scripts on set and put them on “a bonfire,” burning all the scripts and call sheets because “it turns out someone from Prince’s camp said, ‘Who are the celebrities? I hope it’s not a Kardashian.'”
