Stream Braids Companion EP
Braids released their beautiful full-length Deep In The Iris last year, and they will follow it up next week with an accompanying EP. Companion delves into themes explored on Deep In The Iris, which I wrote a bit about for our 5 Best Songs list last week. The four songs included on Companion were written while the Canadian band was working on Deep In The Iris, and they told The FADER that the tracks were recorded in the months following that album’s release. Braids are so damn good because Raphaelle Standell-Preston writes lyrics that mine personal insecurities and then together, as a band, they manage to fuse all that pain into criminally catchy hooks. On “Joni,” Standell-Preston sings: “We don’t know where we’re going/ I will be fine without knowing, darling/ Can my home be here inside of me/ Even when I’m on the other side of where I wanna be.” That chorus makes me want to jump out of my skin and dance at the same time. Listen to the EP in its entirety below.
Companion is out 5/20 via Arbutus.
