Moonface And Siinai – “Them Call Themselves Old Punks”
Spencer Krug may be busy with Wolf Parade’s return, but he’s also set to drop Moonface’s My Best Human Face — a collaborative album with Finland kraut-rockers Siinai — this summer. We’ve heard the lead single “Risto’s Riff,” where Siinai’s influence was easily apparent because the track was harder than anything Krug had released under the Moonface moniker. Today, they follow up with a song leaning more toward Krug’s sensibilities, “Them Call Themselves Punks.”
The song is a mid-tempo, synth-driven journey with syncopated drums and atmospheric sweeps colliding against sparse electric guitar strokes. Krug sings on the hook, “I’ve heard them call themselves old punks/ I’d say we’ve all stared at the moon until its nothing but a rock in the sky/ There’s nothing punk about that.” He questions the lies people tell themselves so often that they actually believe them to be truth, and the way his vocals cut through the roomy arrangement makes it quite a penetrating quandary. Listen.
