Mikey Erg – “Apart Time” (Stereogum Premiere)
Since Mikey Erg announced the release of his debut solo album Tentative Decisions a few weeks ago with lead single “Comme Si About Me,” we got word that the New Jersey musician’s old band the Ergs! were reuniting and releasing new material, which is exciting because there can never be too much Erg-related music in the world. “Apart Time,” the next song we’re hearing from his solo album, is evidence of that: It’s a no-frills pop-rocker that features guitar and synth-playing from the record’s producer Jeff Rosenstock and backing vocals courtesy of Hiccup’s Alex Clute. Erg reminisces on a past flame and wonders what they’re doing while he’s “just sitting alone in a bar depressed and lonely.” It builds to the self-fulfilling prophecy of a hook: “Crank up the volume” — yeah! — “you don’t love me anymore.” “‘Apart Time’ is one of my favorite songs on the record,” Erg says. “It’s one of those tunes that just popped out. Like, it was written in the time it took to play it. Those usually end up being my favorites.” Listen below.
Tentative Decisions is out 6/24 via Don Giovanni Records. Pre-order it here.
