TSP – “Splinters”
The Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando, folk singer-songwriter Willy Mason, and wonderful folk-rocker Marciana Jones are TSP (The Sandwich Police). Dando says the trio is a Flying Nun tribute band — referencing the New Zealand label that gave us the recently reunited Chills, the Bats, the Verlaines, the 3Ds, etc. — and the likes of the Velvet Underground and 13th Floor Elevators work their way into TSP’s sound too. Here’s Jones on how the band came together:
Evan and I were sitting around a fire talking when we discovered that we both call the same field on the way to one of our favorite beaches “Africa.” I invited him over to play music the next evening and we have spent most of our spare time together since. At some point we realized that playing music together, and with Willy, made us both really happy.
They’re set to drop their debut three-song digital single this week. A 7″ vinyl will also follow next week. The first offering from the three-track extravaganza is “Splinters.” It’s a jangling affair with wonderful intertwining guitars and beautiful multi-part harmonies. That ease and happiness Jones described is palpable. Check it out.
