Weezer – “I Love The USA”
About five years ago, NASA launched the Juno spacecraft, an unmanned and solar-powered probe that will study Jupiter. On the fourth of July, Juno is set to arrive in Jupiter’s orbit. And so the geniuses at NASA did the logical thing: They apparently asked Weezer to write a song about it. Weezer complied, coming up with the synthy patriotic anthem “I Love The USA,” which is not actually about the Juno mission or Jupiter in any way I can discern. I have to wonder if NASA expected a song with the chorus “I love the USA / Fuck yeah, this place is great” when they made the request. Also, Rivers Cuomo sings, “God save the king,” on the hook? I don’t even know. Of the one-off single, Cuomo posted this on Weezer’s website: “We were on tour abroad, and it got me thinking a lot about America, which lead to me write ‘I Love The USA.’ When Apple and NASA asked us to be involved with Juno’s historic landing on July 4th, this song seemed like the perfect fit.” Listen to the song below.
“I Love The USA” is out now at iTunes.
