Turtlenecked – “Mondrian”
Turtlenecked is the project of Portland-based musician Harrison Smith, who started putting out music under the name last fall and has already amassed an extensive back catalog. His next release, the full-length Pure Plush Bone Cage, is knotted, confrontational weirdo-rock at its finest. On “Mondrian,” Smith finds himself stuck in a relationship where the other party puts him down (“Charlie told me I can’t paint like Mondrian”), but is self-defeated enough to stick around anyway. He turns the relationship into something it’s not — “Still I sit with my pen and page/ To twist our lukewarm romance into a much more tired cliche” — and forces a spark where there is none, whether out of fear, loneliness, desperation, or all of the above. Pure Plush Bone Cage is out 8/19 via Good Cheer Records. Pre-order it here.
