Fern Mayo – “New Ketamine”
Last year, Fern Mayo released their studio debut, Happy Forever, and the Brooklyn-bred group is following that up with a three-track EP called Hex Signs, out tomorrow. “New Ketamine” starts out with tense and pinched-nerve guitar work that gradually unspools by song’s end. It’s all about breaking prescribed patterns and starting fresh down your own path: “Just ’cause it’s tradition doesn’t make it right,” Katie Capri sings. “Tradition seems useless to me/ Tradition seems content to continually kill the I and the team.” “Who do you listen to?” she asks during the extended breakdown, a question that only gets more complicated the older we get. Listen below.
