Your Friend – “Radio Silence” (James Blake Cover)
Taryn Miller is a Kansas-based songwriter who released her impressive debut album as Your Friend earlier this year. Gumption paired Beach House-style mysticism against an adventurous range of textures — some scratchy and creepy, others dreamy and romantic — but nothing quite as sonically bare as what was found on James Blake’s still relatively fresh The Colour In Anything. Yet Miller should consider minimizing more often, as her cover of Blake’s “Radio Silence” is absolutely stunning. She goes even further than the British songwriter to cultivate empty space, foregoing the original’s icy electronic flares for a simple backdrop of harmonies and a steady heartbeat, along with a creaking clock-tick undercurrent. She allows for enough breathing room to hold a whole extra minute on the original, but every second of it drifts forth dreamily and longingly.
