Slothrust – “Horseshoe Crab”
Slothrust are a Brooklyn-based trio of Sarah Lawrence grads who make jazz- and blues-inflected indie rock, music that alternately simmers and erupts. They’re gearing up for the release of their third LP, Everyone Else, this fall, and today, they’re sharing slow-burning lead single and album centerpiece “Horseshoe Crab.” The song starts out on the quieter side of their range with jazzy strums and slowly circling percussion, building to a tempest of guitar as Leah Wellbaum’s voice rises from a conversational drawl to an urgent howl: “Sometimes I feel like I’m a seahorse/ Sometimes I think that I’m a horseshoe crab/ I don’t have anything in common with myself/ Except that I came from the sea, like everyone else did/ But it is so unfamiliar now.” Listen below.
