serpentwithfeet – “blisters”

Last month we heard “Flickering,” our first exposure to 27-year-old Baltimore native Josiah Wise. Wise has a background as a classical vocalist, but under the name serpentwithfeet, he’s blending those influences with dark, artful R&B and gospel. The sound he’s landed on is compelling and truly original.

A new track called “blisters” arrives today along with news of an EP by the same name. Spare yet ornate, it’s like a electronic chamber-pop track a la ANOHNI that occasionally explodes into soulful flourishes out of a Boyz II Men hit. That makes sense given that Wise cites Brandy and Björk as key influences. Against gradually intensifying ripples of sound, Wise emotes, “The darkness of the leaves has come/ Forgiveness has not,” his ad libs spiraling upward in search of absolution. It’s amazing, so listen to it.
