Minor Victories — the collaborative ensemble of Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite, Editors’’ Justin Lockey, and Hand Held Cine Club’s James Lockey — might be the most kickass new band of the year. Their self-titled debut came out in early June, and it’s truly excellent: a forceful, yet descriptive collection of tempered post-punk. It sets up Minor Victories as the paragon for symphonic shoegaze, equal parts voracious slowcore and tender alt-rock.

The band has also proved themselves masters of a particular visual aesthetic — a slow burning, black-and-white, single-take film style that acts as a motion portrait of sorts. Early this year they shared the Lockey brothers-directed video for “A Hundred Ropes,” which captured a stunning slow-motion samurai charge, and then subsequently one for “Folk Arp,” starring no more than a camera-eyeing cook and an old-fashioned stereo. And when we interviewed Goswell, we shared the similarly barebones visual for “Breaking My Light.” The most recent example of their excellence in minimalist filmmaking is the video for “Cogs,” which tells a grippingly stark narrative. Like the best of the band’s music, it unfolds patiently, yet is never less than wholly exhilarating. Watch below.
