Raury – “NEVERALONE”
ATLien wunderkind Raury has been relatively quiet musically since following up 2014’s Indigo Child with last year’s All We Need. He dropped the one-off “Home” earlier this year, but has been more focused on the latest edition of Raurfest. Today he’s back with “NEVERALONE.”
The song is inspired by skydiver Luke Aikins, who will skydive with nothing but the clothes on his back for a televised event called Stride Gum Presents Heaven Sent. The song is also inspired by Raury’s own skydiving experience, a newfound appreciation for daredevil stunts and the inner peace they give him. Like many of Raury’s songs, “NEVERALONE” is a youthful anthem filled with hope, optimism and verve. He raps, “I’ma be alright, I’m beaming for the skies/ And if I kiss the clouds, then I might be alright,” and sings on the hook, “You are never alone, no you are never alone, no matter where you go/ From LA to Tokyo, that you are never alone.” He captures youthful invincibility and bravado over a tribal, folky, R&B gumbo. Here’s what he had to say about the inspiration for the song and how he thinks he and Aikins are similar:
I just happen to be born in Atlanta, and had access to music and this happened to me. I’m a musical daredevil. He was born where he was born and he had access to skydiving. The differences between being a musician or being a skydiver…it’s all honestly the same. We’re all people who believe something [and] try to show the world what’s in our head, our dreams.
