The Bells: A Daylong Celebration Of Lou Reed, a tribute event curated by Reed’s wife Laurie Anderson and producer Hal Willner, kicked off at NYC’s Lincoln Center today. The festivities began with an tai-chi class led by Reed’s instructor Master Ren GuangYi, followed by covers of his music performed by a rotating cast of musicians including Anohni, Metric’s Emily Haines, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplan, Jon Spencer, Patti Smith Group’s Lenny Kaye, New York Dolls’ David Johansen, and more, plus readings of his lyrics by people like Steve Buscemi and Willem Dafoe.
