If you’re like me, you’ve spent the past week with the theme music to BoJack Horseman, the great Netflix cartoon that just started its third season, bouncing around in your head. The pieced-together, Pink Panther-esque theme was created by Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney and his uncle Ralph. Ralph Carney is a multi-instrumentalist who’s played with people like Tom Waits, the B-52s, Galaxie 500, and St. Vincent, as well as the Black Keys. The two of them put the music together before the show’s producers contacted them, and Ralph, quite rightly, compares his saxophone to that of Lisa Simpson. On the latest episode of Song Exploder, the podcast where musicians spend a few minutes breaking down their songs, both Patrick and Ralph discuss how the theme came to be.
