Colorado College Plans First-Ever Scholarly Symposium On Billy Joel
Colorado College is holding the first-ever scholarly symposium on Billy Joel. The program, which is called “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me”: The Music And Lyrics Of Billy Joel, will feature thirty separate presentations about the singer on such topics as “Billy Joel As A Teenager,” “Billy Joel And Film,” and “Billy Joel And Professional Discourse,” not to mention “‘She’s Got A Way’: The Gendered And Physical Embodiment Of Interpreting Billy Joel In American Sign Language.” The symposium’s keynote event is an hour-long phone conversation with the man himself, followed by a concert event featuring covers of some Billy Joel songs.
“Billy Joel’s career has spanned more than five decades, yet by comparison to musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, virtually no scholarly attention has been given to Joel’s music,” one of the assistant professors at the college said in a press release.
More information about the symposium (which is open to the public if you register) can be found here.
