Shia LaBeouf, the onetime enfant-terrible movie star who fucked up his career by being consistently drunk and making weird decision after weird decision, is on some sort of comeback path right now, appearing in nothing but arthouse movies. But while he’s stopped drinking, he mercifully continues to make strange, flummoxing decisions. LaBeouf is the star of the forthcoming improvised indie road movie American Honey, and a new Variety cover story centers around his experience getting clean and acting in the movie. And while there are many, many great quotes in the movie, there are none better than the bit about LaBeouf’s new Missy Elliott tattoos.

In the story, we learn that the cast of the movie — all, other than LaBoeuf, unknown actors — would bond by going to get new tattoos whenever they came to a new town. (This, as you can imagine, was a massive headache for director Andrea Arnold, who had to worry about little things like continuity.) LaBoeuf got 12 new tattoos while he was filming the movie, and those tattoos included two portraits of Missy Elliott on both of his knees.
