Joyce Manor – “Last You Heard Of Me”
California pop-punkers Joyce Manor are set to follow up their 2014 breakout, Never Hunger Again, with their new album, Cody, later this fall. The lead single, “Fake I.D.,” earned a spot on our 5 Best Songs Of The Week, and they gave it the visual treatment a few weeks ago.
Today, they offer the followup “Last You Heard Of Me.” It’s a slow-building jam with rhythmic guitar strums and thick, fuzzy layers piling on as Barry Johnson tells a penetrating story about seeing a lover for the first time after the dissolution of their relationship. Johnson sings “And in the moment I see everything/ Start to finish, sad defeat/ Shivering, lying naked next to you/ That’s the last you heard of me.” Jeez. Joyce Manor have a way of communicating some devastating sentiments with a subtlety that makes for sneaky potency. Listen.
Cody is out 10/7 via Epitaph.
