DJ Quik – “Black Friday”
For decades, the Compton legend DJ Quik has been among our greatest sources of musically advanced, lyrically knuckleheaded West Coast rap music. Earlier this year, he teamed up with Problem for the very good collaborative EP Rosecrans. But on his latest track, Quik is in a more contemplative state of mind, troubled, as so many of us are, by all the recent police shootings. The warm, sad, soulful “Black Friday” is Quik’s attempt at writing a Black Lives Matter anthem, and while it’s a bit more awkward than some of his slick-talk material, it’s made with the best of intentions. Listen to it below, via Miss Info.
On the song’s SoundCloud description Quik writes: “I wrote this piece because I don’t like the tumultuous air surrounding Black People. Someone had to speak up for the African American community on this Black Friday and I elect Me to do so.”
