Stream Kuroma The Dark Horse Rides Again
Hank Sullivant was a bassist in the Whigs and a touring guitarist with MGMT during their Oracular Spectacular-era breakout, but all the while he’s been releasing his own music under the name Kuroma. The project’s latest collection of psych-pop goodies, The Dark Horse Rides Again, is entering the world this Friday, but we’ve got an early stream today.
We’ve all become accustomed to indie rock from conflicted ex-Catholics, but this album presents a rare instance of the opposite phenomenon: It’s about Sullivant’s conversion to Roman Catholicism. That’s not entirely unprecedented — the Rapture’s 2011 swan song In The Grace Of Your Love found frontman Luke Jenner embracing Catholicism after his mother’s suicide — but still, it’s not every day we hear pro-Catholic rock music from artists besides Pope Francis.
Despite the unique subject matter, Sullivant’s musical background is more likely to grab your attention here. It’s obvious why MGMT asked this guy to join their band: The Dark Horse Rides Again is expert-level psychedelic chamber-pop, tapping into the same kaleidoscopic ’60s and ’70s fantasias that inspired Sullivant’s fellow Athens products in the Elephant 6 collective. It’s achingly pretty music delivered with a gentle touch. Check out the full album below.
The Dark Horse Rides Again is out 10/14 on Votiv. Pre-order it here.
