Watch The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney Snark On Lady Gaga’s “Perfect Illusion”
Last night, HBO’s new nightly news show VICE News Tonight debuted a segment called Patrick Carney’s High Standards Music Corner, a recurring feature in which the Black Keys drummer tells the audience what he thinks of recently released songs. For its inaugural edition, Carney shares his opinion on OneRepublic (“I wouldn’t mind if it came on in Abercrombie & Fitch”), Norah Jones (whose music he apparently once compared to the Frasier theme song, though he says he “likes” the new one), and Lady Gaga’s Joanne lead single “Perfect Illusion.”
“First of all, I hate guitars that sound like that!” he starts off. “I’m lost because the guitar at the top of it sounds so shitty. It’s like ‘Eye Of The Tiger,’ but not even nearly as good as that. It sounds like Hulk Hogan is playing the fucking guitar.” He then goes on to recount a story about when he met the freedom of the press-hating wrestler, and calls him “very nice.” Carney concludes with saying that “Perfect Illusion” is growing on him, but still directs one last shit-eating grin towards the camera. Watch below.
UPDATE: The producers and Gaga herself have responded to Carney’s snark.
@MarkRonson @pitchfork he's not as snarky as I would be watching him in a guitar death-match w Kevin Parker and Josh F??cking Homme

UPDATE 2: Carney has responded to Gaga and Ronson, telling them to “lighten up and listen up.”
To be clear @ladygaga @MarkRonson I just said the guitar at the top sounds like Hogan™. Lighten up and listen up. https://t.co/yx2NlNIyCt
