Please, God, Do Not Let Taylor Swift Record A Hip-Hop/R&B Album
Lately, Taylor Swift has been seen in public a couple of times with Drake, leading many on the internet to speculate that the two are dating. But now, a new and infinitely more troubling possibility has emerged? What if they’re making music together? What if Taylor Swift is attempting to make rap music?
As Jezebel points out, the UK tabloid The Sun — which, granted, is not the most reputable source — is claiming that Swift is “exploring the new urban sound in the studio” and that she’s brought in Drake to help out. The newspaper quotes a source who says that Drake has produced a few tracks for Swift and added his vocals to one song, and that Swift’s new music is “a real mix of edgier hip-hop and R&B sounds.”
And yes, the blame is on us for letting this happen. That same unnamed source says, “The remix of her song ‘Bad Blood’ had a less pop vibe — especially once Kendrick Lamar featured on it — and was a big hit, so she thinks her fans will like her going in this direction.” We should’ve known. We should’ve seen it coming.
Let’s be plain here: This is a fucking horrible idea. Like, it’s the worst idea. Taylor Swift is a pop songwriter with impeccable instincts, and she has never recorded a less-than-great album. But her songwriting gifts are in no way compatible with any form of rap or R&B that has ever existed. And if she’s just bringing in Drake to make fake dancehall à la “One Dance,” that’s nearly as fucking bad. The world is scary enough these days. A Taylor Swift rap album is emphatically not what we need.
