Laura Marling – “Soothing” Video
The UK singer-songwriter Laura Marling is a restless spirit who’s always pushing her voice forward and working on something new. Last year, she complicated her own folk sound with the tangled, admirable album Short Movie, and this year she launched a new podcast about feminine creativity. Today, she’s announced the impending release of a new album called Semper Femina, one that she says will continue to explore the idea of feminine empathy. First single “Soothing” is a powerful piece of music, and it has a jazz bassline and orchestral string flourishes underneath its impressionistic acoustic core. In its video, which Marling has also shared, two dancers in latex bodysuits sprawl across a mattress together. Below, watch the video and read Marling’s statement about the new album, via The FADER.
Marling says:
I started out writing Semper Femina as if a man was writing about a woman. And then I thought it’s not a man, it’s me — I don’t need to pretend it’s a man to justify the intimacy of the way I’m looking and feeling about women. It’s me looking specifically at women and feeling great empathy towards them and by proxy towards myself.
Semper Femina is out 3/10 on Marling’s own More Alarming Records; pre-order it here.
