Watch The Roots, Busta Rhymes, & Joell Ortiz Do Hamilton‘s “My Shot” On The Tonight Show
Last week, Lin-Manuel Miranda released The Hamilton Mixtape, on which famous rap and pop stars took on the songs from Miranda’s hit Broadway musical Hamilton and made those songs their own. Billboard reports that the compilation is on track to debut at #1, higher than the #3 peak of the Hamilton original cast recording and ahead of hyped-up new albums from the Rolling Stones and Childish Gambino. On the album’s first single, the Roots, along with fellow East Coast rap standbys Busta Rhymes and Joell Ortiz, took on the motivational anthem “My Shot.” And last night, they assembled on The Tonight Show to perform the new version of the song. They made a theatrical production of it, too, with Black Thought rapping to a made-up boardroom, Ortiz delivering his verse from a podium, and Busta wearing maybe the most amazing coat I’ve ever seen. Watch the performance below.
The Hamilton Mixtape is out now on Atlantic. In these dark days, you can at least be thankful that you were not one of the animated young people in the front row there.
