Watch Sleater-Kinney Cover David Bowie & George Michael On New Year’s Eve
As much as anything else, 2016 was about remembering the musical legends we lost. And on the last night of the year, Sleater-Kinney found a fitting and celebratory way to do just that. The band played a New Years Eve show at San Francisco’s Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium, and as CoS points out, they closed it out by covering the first and the last musical legends that died last year. They got help from their two opening acts, the Thermals and Spoon frontman Britt Daniel, the latter of whom DJed set consisting entirely of David Bowie and Prince covers. For the first of the night’s two encores, Sleater-Kinney sang George Michael’s “Faith,” with Carrie Brownstein taking lead vocals. And as a rousing show-closing singalong, they did Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel,” with Corin Tucker, Daniel, and the Thermals’ Hutch Harris all taking verses. Watch fan-made videos of both performances below.
Here’s to hoping we don’t have to send off 2017 like that, glorious as those performances might’ve been.
