Saltland – “I Only Wish This For You”
Montreal-based cellist Rebecca Foon, who records her solo work under the moniker Saltland, is set to release A Common Truth, the follow-up to her 2013 debut, I Thought It Was Us But It Was All Of Us. Foon is a climate activist, as well as a member of a Canadian urban sustainability cooperative and a composer for a number of environment-focused film projects. Her passion for climate justice is a focal point of A Common Truth, and feels more necessary than ever in the chaos of the new administration’s attempt to chokehold climate research.
The album’s solemn lead single, “I Only Wish This For You,” is built on several cello loops, weaving a thick patchwork of rising-then-cresting orchestral moods. Foon’s voice is delicate, yet gripping, and she captures complete despair with a calming grace, breaking your heart gently when she resigns to ask, “How to break this vicious cycle of greed?” It’s the most prominent question of our times, and Saltland reminds us of its grave urgency.
