Anna Wise – “Coconuts” Video
Last year, Anna Wise released her debut solo EP, The Feminine: Act 1, after a few years of collaborating with Kendrick Lamar and performing as one-half of Sonnymoon. It was a brash and poppy collection of songs, as evidenced by early singles like “BitchSlut” and “Precious Possession.” For its follow-up, the aptly named The Feminine: Act 2, Wise leans into spindly R&B and airy jazz, like on lead single “Coconuts,” which comes with a video that Wise self-directed based around understated dancing in a dreamy room that feels removed from space and time. Here’s what Wise had to say about the video shoot:
The days I spent planning and filming the video for ‘Coconuts’ will stick in my mind and heart as some of the best days of my life. The idea came to me during a vision state brought on by an incredible pedicure in sunny Glendale, CA. I wanted to tell the story of a woman approaching a life changing event who travels to the edge of the earth to seek advice from her guides. I wanted to show female unity. The video was shot on two of the coldest days Brooklyn has seen this winter, with a small crew of 3 women and 1 man. The energy on set was that of a teenage sleep over, and I mean that in the best possible way. We spoke about love and orgasm and art and activism and inter-sectional feminism while we massaged each other’s feet and stretched. We ate together and sang together between takes. We spent more time relaxing than we did shooting the actual video. This is how I like to work…easy, natural, flowing, and tapped into the frequency. By the time we had accomplished the shots that I had visualized in that chair in Glendale, everyone was in a sedated, dream-like state. We had an exquisite experience curating a positive healing energy that we now hope is going to shine through to everyone who watches. The same can be said of the full project, ‘The Feminine: Act II.’ This is an important time for all women to feel proud and happy to be ourselves, exactly as we are. To love ourselves and truly listen to and love others. I hope this project is a testament to the strength and the power that women have when we work together.
